Magic Coat Flea & Tick Shampoo for Cats, 12-Ounce Review

My short-haired kittens, now ~12 weeks old, came from the shelter with a free! bonus! infestation of fleas, so I treated the house with frequent vacuuming and very liberal application of Buck Mountain Herbal Gold Parasite Dust, and I treated the animals with Frontline Plus. However, I must have misapplied the Frontline (i.e., put it in a spot where they could lick it off, and didn't sequester the kittens from each other so they couldn't lick the medicine off each other before it dried). The stuff worked dramatically at first, but the kittens never really stopped scratching, and two weeks later, I started seeing adult fleas running around again.

Since I can't reapply Frontline to the boys for another two weeks, this morning I washed them with this shampoo. I lathered each kitten up in turn, starting at his head and paying special attention to his ears, where the fleas like to hang out. I kept the lather on for as close to five minutes as I could, per the directions on the bottle. There were a few dead fleas in the water when I was done, but even as I toweled the boys dry, it was clear that many more live insects were left on their bodies.

Since then, the kittens have been bright, clean, fluffy, soft, . . . and scratching more than ever. Every time I look at them, I see a flea crawling somewhere in their fur--vigorous and seemingly unscathed. It really seems like all this flea shampoo did was to make the fleas more mobile, and more aggressive.

So tomorrow I'll try combing, Victor sticky flea traps, and lots more vacuuming and laundering. I'll use this shampoo for future kitten baths, because I already have it and it seems to leave the boys' fur in a nice state, but I won't expect it to help with the flea problem at all. Disappointing.

Sergeant's Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On Cat Review

Our 2 and a half year old orange tabby Oliver died last night because of SERGEANT'S GOLD SQUEEZE ON FOR CATS flea and tick treatment. Oliver was an extremely healthy and loving cat. In a little more than 24 hours he went from playing with his favorite toy, a laser, to dead. On Wednesday August 31, 2010 we applied some of this horrible product. We followed the directions accurately. On Thursday he was acting different. He had been hiding all day and refused to play with his laser. That night we decided to take him to the emergency room for precautionary reasons. The veterinarian suggested we leave him in the hospital over night for observation. We left the vet's office at 10:45 PM. At about 12:00am, an hour and 15 minutes after we had left him we got a phone call from the hospital. That was probably one of the worst if not the worst phone call I've ever received. The vet said that we applied the medication correctly and that Oliver had only ingested a minimal amount of it. The problem was that his skin absorbed the product and it got into his bloodstream causing organ failure. There was nothing the veterinarians could do to save him. I could not sleep that night. I kept thinking about all the forums I readonline that I didn't believe. I honestly thought my cat was going to be just fine because he was eating and still came out of hiding for treats. Little did I know that this product was slowly killing him. PLEASE believe me when I say DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT. The veterinarians told us that these over the counter products are NOT safe. I know that the flea medications that are prescribed by a veterinarians are expensive, but I would pay 10,000 times that to have Oliver back. Please please please spread the word about these medications. I've had animals my entire life and I never knew how dangerous they were. I don't understand how it is even allowed to be on the market. Sergeant's website even says that when used properly it is safe on animals. THIS IS A LIE. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Please find any other alternative to treat fleas. Because in the end I would take a flea infested Oliver as oppose to no Oliver at all.

Advantage Once-A-Month Topical Flea Treatment for Cats Review

Advantage Once-A-Month Topical Flea Treatment for Cats

My cats have fleas!Or, at least, they had fleas.I have used over-the-counter, less expensive items (flea powders, flea collars, etc.) up to and including other topical products like this one, and nothing worked. The flea collars were less than worthless - they actually caused patches of fur to fall out on at least one cat. The powder was unwieldy, and the other topical applications (save one) did not work at all.

I must give credit where credit is due - I have used Frontline before for my cats, and have been very satisfied with the results from that one. However, I decided to try Advantage this time, as I'd heard good things about it, and it was on sale at a discount when I needed it.I couldn't be more pleased.Unlike most other topical applications where the flea substance is put on the shoulder blades of the cats and stinks (STINKS!), this has no easily discernable smell.

This is a good thing. Also, the cats seemed to settle down from their scratching and biting at fleas within just a few minutes.Last night was the first night in weeks that the cats have all rested peacefully. There were no signs of flea-dirt left in their usual sleeping spaces last night.I am very pleased indeed.

My cats are also happy. While I still have an appreciation for Frontline, I am happy to have Advantage as a viable alternative.

The cats give this a sixteen-paw salute!(Four cats, four paws each, you know...)
