It was time for flea treatment but the vet's office was closed so I couldn't purchase our usual Frontline spot on treatment. I purchased this one instead and applied to my perfectly healthy Wheaten Terrier exactly as directed. Even though I didn't see any info about preventing other animals from licking the product off his back, I did put a tank top on him to keep him from scratching the area and possibly getting the product on his paws where he could lick them.
Within about 20 minutes I noticed he was coughing as if he was choking a little on something. Then he started pacing up and down the hallway. He would sit down but jump up within seconds as if something was poking or biting him. I thought maybe the fleas were just scrambling for their last supper or something so still was not overly alarmed at this point. However, then I noticed when he tried to sit down, his body was spasming. His legs were all jerky and he kept jerking his head back over his shoulder. Very odd behavior, definitely not normal. He was breathing very heavily and seemed distressed. Then I noticed as he was pacing that it was like he was hallucinating. He appeared to see or hear things and jerk around but nothing was there. It was like he was tripping on LSD.
I gave him some Benadryl and then held him while his body jerked. At this point I realized he was experiencing mild seizures and that was the reason for the jerky and fidgety behavior. He was so confused about what was going on and wanted to be held constantly. While I was holding my 45 pound baby in my lap, I started researching online and found that if you type "sergeant's sentry xfc" in the search field, the first site that comes up is a blog of other pet owners who have experienced exactly what we were going through. [...]
Since this site came up first, it was obvious that it has had more hits than Sergeant's own website, if that tells you anything. Many pets have experienced severe reactions to their products and some have died. Sergeants will not pull the product stating that the problem is minor and only affects a very small percentage of animals. I really don't believe this based on the reports where pet owners have given the correct dosage to multiple pets and all of them have had reactions. One person at a shelter gave it to 17 dogs and 16 of them had serious reactions. This is much higher than the 1% claim of problems that Sargeant's claims.
When people have attempted to leave reviews with PetSmart and Petco on their sites, they have removed the negative reports only leaving positive information which is very misleading to customers. This is one of the things I really respect about Amazon is that they will report the good, bad and ugly reviews. For this, we thank you.
After 2 1/2 days and 2 sleepless nights while my baby continued to experience mild seizures, he is finally getting back to normal. And our experience wasn't as severe as many others. Please do not use this product on your pet. I never have had problems with the other spot on treatment but I plan to find a natural alternative for the flea problems. Every one of the people who purchased this product did it out of love and caring for their pets and each one of us feels guilty for being the one who applied this to our babies.
